welcome to 6th grade math with Mrs. Weise
Intro to Math:
As one of the math teachers at Norton Middle School, it is my pleasure to welcome you to grade 6 math on the purple team. I belong to an awesome group of teachers who are passionate about teaching their subject and dedicated to working together to provide the safest and best learning environment for our students. It is our desire to have each and every student reach his/her full potential.
Our math curriculum is based on the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for 6th Grade Mathematics established by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. We use McGraw-Hill's Glencoe Course 1 consumable math book and it's associated website, ConnectEd. The book is supplemented with manipulatives, fun math videos, individual student whiteboards, Khan Academy, other interactive math websites, and various activities and games that I have either collected or created throughout my teaching career. I have been working to incorporate more intentional focus on the Mathematical Practices so that all students see themselves as mathematicians and know how to think like a mathematician. To do this, I have specific lessons and strategies I employ to get students thinking and paying attention to their thinking and the thinking of their classmates. The emphasis is more on the problem solving process than on the answer to the problem. I may ask students to solve problems without giving them any instruction as to how to solve it as the goal is to get them to use their own thinking skills to tackle new problems like they will have to do in the real world. This goal is in direct alignment with the district's vision of a graduate as a critical thinker and problem solver. To the best of my ability, I try to get every student engaged in every lesson. I love math, teaching, and learning, and it is my hope to fuel the desire of students to become lifelong learners and the best problem solvers they can be.
About Mrs. Weise:
I have been teaching math on this team since the Fall of 2009, and have 5 years of previous experience teaching all 6th grade subjects at F.L. Olmsted School in Easton, MA. Prior to teaching I earned my CPA as an auditor working for the public accounting firm LGC&D in Providence, RI.
I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bryant University, earning a BSBA with a double major in accounting and international studies. While at Bryant, I studied abroad for one semester in Granada, Spain, taking two of my classes there completely in Spanish. To transition to teaching from public accounting, I attended Rhode Island College and earned my MAT with a 4.0 GPA. I continue to increase my knowledge and improve my teaching skills by participating in various workshops and graduate-level courses. I am a member of NCTM and MACS.
Having grown up in the smallest state of the country, Rhode Island, I now truly enjoy both working and living in the small town of Norton. I am married with two children, both of whom attend NHS! We have a one-eyed cat named Toby, and we all enjoy the woods, fields, ponds, and wild animals which surround our home. Besides going for walks with my family, I enjoy working out, biking, reading, photography, and camping. I also love to travel and see new places. I have visited 12 different states, 9 different countries, and three Western Caribbean islands. My dream destinations I have yet to get to are the Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Alaska, an African safari, and Australia.
